Nihillist/Peter Penis and the Transformers - split 7"
I thought this was going to be complete Austrlaian noise bullshit - sure, it's darn noisy but how very wrong i was. Seminal newie grind maniacs Nihillist begin this 7" playing fast screechy hardcore/crust crossover. Lightening pace but songs are pretty long. Not as good as the paranoise tape comp tracks but nevertheless still some decent grind here. if you think PPT's name is wierd then wait till you here the band! Two tracks that sounds more like ten short sharp bursts of severe crust/grind bile interspersed with wierd electronica. Thumbs up for beinbg original, the only comparison could be US band Locust (but their casio sound sucks, at least PPT use reasonable equipment). Go the Newie grind extremists, the underground is still alive and vomiting!

Arms Reach/Forward Defence - split 7"
OK, everyone is raving about newie and yeah, I'll admit that its pretty damn good. Newcastle hardcorers arms REach are the best of the two bands, contributing four great tracks. Standouts include "Your Rules Not Mine" with its cool and justified "anti-rules in the hardcore/punk" message, and also "Release" with its fuckign hard riffing - this is the perfect music to stomp to, and its making the prospect of their forthcoming ep seem more and more tantilising by the mintue. On the flipside, it's up to Forward Defence to entertain us and they do so in typical style. This is five tracks of harcore mayhem, with tracks such as "No way out" and "This Fate (both of which have appeared on Canberra Compilations) being my pick of the bunch. However on the downside, Id just like to point out the current exploitation of this great band. I mean, there was supposed to be a 7" out on the Heinous Fuck label for more thatn two years running! Then this band splits up and suddenly whoopee, everyone wants to throw money at them and most of the cash in on the fact that they split up. This has nothing to do with FD, I just think that they were worthy of this sort of attention before they split up, this hardcore cash-in is getting pretty monotonous. Oh yeah,I should mention that this comp is so well packaged with its glossy fold out cover and awesom lyric inset. Its a great effort, I just think that FD deserved it before the worst happened. by the way, ARMS REACH RULE!!!!!!!

Conation/FAT Human Filth - split 7"
Praise is definately in order for paranoise, they are doing a fantastic job with supporting the thriving local grind/crust/powerviolence scene and this ep is no exception. mBoth bnds do the grindcore thing with good speed variations a rarity when talking about this kind of music. Conation are one of Newcastles hottest bands at the moment - their songs are afflicted with that slow-fast-heavy combination a la Grief which is just so awesome to hear, all seven songs are winners with those 7 seconds long one liners being the standouts, especially "Corporate killing". "Good Governement" is a ripper too. FAT give us the songs 20-25 inclusive. I really like their speed variations, they pull it off so well and the recording really does them justice. Comments on the packaging too, it's real good with lyrics sheet and song explanations. Two thumbs up.

No Strings Attached - Self Titled
The Kings of Australian Melodic Punk? Who cares this band is cool in a kooky sort of way, to be fair after seeing them live i was dissapointed when i heard the tape. Live N.S.A has a much harder sound and seemed to carry the crowd with them. The tape sounds a bit flat and Dave never seems to really get into it on guitar being messy and all over the place, still worth getting hold of however. The standout tracks are "Something's Wrong", the bands anthem about consumerism and "Closed Learning", These two songs RAWK!!!

Bias, Infliction, Nihilist, Brutal Truth... 2nd, Sept, '98
Well I was really keen for this gig but well the venue sucked the sound was terrible and the place was filled with fucking metalheads! The evening started off with Bias and their punchy Korn/Deftones inspired sound and despite my preconceptions i actually liked em. Next was Infliction who fucking rawk if you get the chance go see them cause i cant describe it... imagine a weedy farmer... nah i canna do it, anyway they dedicated their song "hate" to the venue wich just about summed it up. Nihilist again sounded awesome, but i was pretty drunk by that time and cant remember enough to write about it. Brutal Truth sounded a bit tired and i couldnt really get into it because of the amount of thrashing hair and slutty chicks... decided to go and finish a longneck in the car and on my way out kicked over a whitepower bike got chased by a bouncer and fled:) damn im hard! fuck im a bit depressed though it could have been a wicked gig but it just didnt happen for me.
